Former politicians in Kabul are experiencing tightly controlled conditions

These individuals are effectively sidelined from participating in civil and political forums, with even routine engagements with the populace requiring prior notification to the Taliban's oversight unit.

Kabul (Kubha News)- Former high-ranking officials and politicians who opted to remain in Kabul following the fall of the republic, find themselves confined to their residences, under the close watch of a specialized unit within the Taliban government.

Sources within their circles reveal that stringent measures are in place, prohibiting their travel to their respective provinces and barring their involvement in any public or political gatherings.

A source intimately acquainted with the situation disclosed to Kubha News that a dedicated intelligence unit of the Taliban has been tasked with overseeing the security arrangements surrounding the residences of these former politicians and officials. “Their movements, interactions, and activities are meticulously monitored”, said the source.

Furthermore, these individuals are effectively sidelined from participating in civil and political forums, with even routine engagements with the populace requiring prior notification to the Taliban’s oversight unit.

Among those who chose to remain in Kabul following the dissolution of the republic are prominent figures such as former President Hamid Karzai and his associates, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, Chairman of the Afghanistan Peace High Council, Fazl Hadi Muslimyar, Chairman of the Senate, and Seyed Hossein Alami Balkhi, former Minister of Refugees, along with other members of the former government.

In March 2022, Fazl Hadi Muslimyar, the former chairman of the Senate, and in April of the same year, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, the former chairman of the High Peace Council, were granted permission to travel abroad. Reports suggest that assurances were provided for their eventual return, although official sources in their proximity have neither confirmed nor refuted the existence of such guarantees.

The former President Hamid Karzai, permitted to travel abroad following negotiations, found his movements restricted by the Taliban, despite invitations from multiple countries.

In multiple internal and external conferences, Amir Khan Muttaqi, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Taliban government, has affirmed that officials and politicians from the former republic government reside in the country without encountering any danger or issues.
