KABUL, Afghanistan – An Indian citizen named Sanaul Islam has been apprehended by the intelligence authorities of the Taliban government in Afghanistan.
Reports indicate that Sanaul Islam, hailing from the state of Kerala, India, was arrested upon his arrival in Afghanistan from Tajikistan with alleged intentions to join ISIS.
The arrest came to light through coverage by The Hindu Post newspaper, which identified Sanaul Islam as a suspect with links to terrorism, accompanying the report with his photograph. However, specific details regarding the province of his arrest remain undisclosed. Following an investigation conducted by the intelligence officials of the Taliban government, Sanaul Islam has been detained in Kandahar province.
The Taliban government has not issued any official statement regarding this development. According to reports from Indian media outlet OPINDIA, “the Taliban government has notified India about the arrest of its citizen. Both countries are reportedly engaged in ongoing discussions to determine the subsequent course of action”.
Sources suggest that Sanaul Islam was initially apprehended by local police on the highway of Kabul- Kandahar. Subsequently, he was handed over to Taliban intelligence officials after preliminary interrogations.
This incident follows previous reports of the detention and elimination of Indian individuals affiliated with the ISIS group in Afghanistan.
