Asadabad (Kubha News)—Two schools in the Nawa area of Sarkano district in Kunar province have reopened after being closed for the past eight years due to rocket attacks by the Pakistani military, according to the Kunar province Education Department.
The Nawa area, a mountainous region near the Durand Line, faced significant turmoil during the previous Afghan government. Pakistani military attacks forced many of the 400 local families to flee, and subsequent conflict involving the Afghan Taliban further exacerbated the displacement.
Mohibullah Haidari, head of education in Kunar, announced that displaced families have now returned, allowing schools to resume operations. “We try to provide all facilities to these schools,” Haidari stated, acknowledging the prolonged closure.

Students have expressed mixed emotions about the reopening. Hosey, a student at Kamar School in Nawa, shared her relief and happiness. “There used to be rocket fire. We moved to the lower valley. The schools there were open, but we did not go to school. Last year, when we returned to our village, our school was still closed, but now I am very happy that it has reopened,” she said.
Yasser, another student, voiced his hopes for better support from the Ministry of Education. “Our school does not have drinking water, we have not been given textbooks, our school does not have a yard,” he pointed out.
The Directorate of Education of Kunar province has acknowledged that many schools in the area still lack essential facilities and stated that efforts are ongoing to address these issues.
