Doha (Kubha News)—Amid escalating concerns over press freedom in Afghanistan, the U.S. Mission to Afghanistan in Qatar has pledged its support for Afghan journalists, emphasizing the crucial role they play in the country’s media landscape.
Mario Crifo, Director of Public Affairs and Spokesperson for the U.S. Mission to Afghanistan, addressed the challenges facing Afghan journalists in a recent press release. He highlighted the increasing harassment and detention of journalists, as well as the unclear regulatory environment for media in the country.
“At its height, Afghan media had become a robust and respected profession, representing a diverse array of perspectives, and providing critically important access to information for the Afghan people,” Crifo stated. “However, the situation for journalism in Afghanistan today has changed.”
Crifo pointed out that the number of women in the profession and the representation of women in Afghan media have declined, along with opportunities for women to attain education in the media sector. He expressed concern over the erosion of talent, independence, and diversity within Afghan media.
Despite these challenges, Crifo commended Afghan journalists for their dedication to truth and journalistic ethics. He reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to defending press freedom in Afghanistan and around the world.
The statement comes as the international community marks World Press Freedom Day, underscoring the importance of a free and independent media in promoting transparency and accountability.
