GENEVA (Kubha News) – Richard Bennett, the Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Afghanistan, called upon the Taliban today to release women human rights defenders in conjunction with the global observation of International Women’s Day.

Bennett emphasized the urgent necessity for the Taliban to release these defenders, aligning with the worldwide acknowledgment of International Women’s Day.

“I reiterate my call to the Taliban to uphold the human rights of all women and girls in Afghanistan, including their rights to education, employment, freedom of movement and expression, and cultural rights,” he stated.

Bennett drew attention to the prevalent institutional and systematic discrimination experienced by Afghan women and girls, commending their bravery, resourcefulness, and leadership in advocating for their rights.

Furthermore, he underscored the critical need for meaningful and fair participation of Afghan women and girls across all realms of public life.

Bennett urged the Taliban to promptly and unconditionally release all individuals who have been detained for championing human rights, with a specific focus on those advocating for the rights of women and girls.
